Ode to My Family (Day 25 of 30-Day Song Challenge)

Ode to my Family by the Cranberries is my choice for Day 25. The challenge is to learn a song from an artist that is no longer living. Dolores O’ Riordan died a few months (Jan 15, 2018)

The One I Love (Day 24 of 30-Day Song Challenge)

I’m super happy just to get this far. I’m learning how to play new songs, I’m appreciating music more and more, whether they’re new or old. Music does a lot to relieve / recharge me from work, or for however my day goes, music switches me on to be positive over and over again.  The challenge for day 24 is to learn a song from a band that I wish is still together. I chose R.E.M. and one of my favorite song from this band is “The One I Love”. Chords from the song are below and the strumming pattern that I used is D D U U D U.

Three Little Birds (Day 23 of 30-Day Song Challenge)

The challenge for today is a song that everyone should listen. Three Little Birds remind me not to worry. This song also evoke positivity, hope, and gratitude for a new day. Coming from a legendary singer Bob Marley, Three Little Birds was released in 1980’s although it was a part of Marley’s Exodus album from 1977. I also liked Connie Talbot‘s rendition of the song. Scroll down to watch her version. Three Little Birds also happen to be the first song I learnt to play using ukulele.

Vincent (Day 21 of 30-Day Song Challenge)

The challenge for today is to play a song that has a name on the title. I chose another classic song, which was released June 17, 1972, (half a decade before I was born!): Vincent by Don Mclean. It was a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh as McLean was inspired by Van Gogh’s life and his painting “The Starry Night”. It’s also fascinating that the song makes use of 4 instruments: accordion, marimba, strings and guitar.

Vincent

Artist: Don Mclean

G
Starry starry night
                    Am
Paint your palette blue and gray
                 C
Look out on a summer's day
      D7 G
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

                G
Shadows on the hills
                           Am
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
                                C
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
     D7 G
In colors on the snowy linen land

        Am D7
Now I understand
                   G Em7
What you tried to say to me
                               Am D7
And how you suffered for your sanity
                               Em7
And how you tried to set them free
                                 A7 Am
They would not listen they did not know how
 D7 G
Perhaps they'll listen now

   G
Starry starry night
                      Am
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
                     C
Swirling clouds in violet haze
 D7 G
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue
                  Am
Morning fields of amber grain
                  C
Weathered faces lined in pain
    D7 G
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

         Am D7
Now I understand
                    G Em7
What you tried to say to me
                                 Am D7
And how you suffered for your sanity
                                   Em7
And how you tried to set them free

                                 A7 Am
They would not listen they did not know how
 D7 G
Perhaps they'll listen now

                Am D7
For they could not love you
                           G
But still your love was true
             Am
And when no hope was left in sight
           Cm
On that starry starry night

      G Em7 A7
You took your life as lovers often do
                 Am
But I could've told you Vincent
     C
This world was never meant for
         D7 G
One as beautiful as you

  G
Starry starry night
                     Am
Portraits hung in empty halls
                       C
Frame-less heads on nameless walls
     D7 G
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met
     Am
The ragged men in ragged clothes
                       C
The silver thorn of bloody rose
      D7 G
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

               Am D7
Now I think I know
                   G Em7
What you tried to say to me
                                  Am D7
And how you suffered for your sanity
                                  Em7
And how you tried to set them free

                                              A7 Am
They would not listen they're not listening still
 D7 G
Perhaps they never will

A Whole New World (Day 20 of 30-Day Song Challenge)

Yay! I’m on my 20th day, the challenge is to learn a song with many meanings to me. I chose this song because I feel like every day is a new day and I’m looking for something new to learn, to be grateful about, and to be hopeful for. I believe that the world will be beautiful and peaceful if we focus on that, a lot may disagree and it may not be a reality but our perception will always shape the way we see the world. Life may be full of challenges but I’d like to experience it in a more positive way, every day. As I wake up in the morning I say, today is a new day and I thank God that I have another day to live, to be happy and to bless the world.

The chords and lyrics that I got were not complete so I just adapted the 2nd verse to be the same as Verse 1 and made my own version of the Outro, according to how I’d play it.

Colors of the Wind (Day 19 of 30-Day Song Challenge)

So I’m out tonight and I thought I won’t be able to do my 19th day of the 30-Day Song Challenge. The challenge is something that makes me think about life. Here’s what I got for tonight: “Colors of the Wind” by Vanessa Williams. There’s about 8 chords in the song, I had to find an alternate for Fmaj7 because I find it difficult to do the regular way:

Am chord  C chord  Dm chord  Dm7 chord  Em chord

F chord  Fmaj7 chord Alt Fmaj7 G chord

Colors of the Wind

Vanessa Williams

Verse:
A C Am
You think you own whatever land you land on
    C Em
the earth is just a dead thing can claim
    Am Em F C
but i know every rock and tree and creature
      Dm G Am
has a life, has a spirit, has a name.
    C Am
You think the only people who are people
        C Em
are the people who look and think like you
    Am Em F C
but if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
             Dm F C
you'll learn things you never knew you never knew.

Chorus:
Em Am Em F
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
   Am Em
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
        F G Em Am
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Verse:

Come taste the sun sweet berries of the earth
     Am G F C
Come roll in all the riches all around you
        Dm C G Am G
And for once never wonder what they're worth.
    C G Am
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
    C Em
The heron and the otter are my friends
    Am G F C
And we are all connected to each other

Em Am Em F
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
   Am Em
or let the eagle tell you where he's been?
        F G Em Am
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain?

If you cut it down then you'll never know.

Em Am Em F
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
    Am Em
For whether we are white or copper skinned
           F G E Am
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains

We need to paint with all the colors of the wind.
